Earth Day 2013: Portsmouth Team!

The JRGM Portsmouth team volunteered for a site clean up at the H.E.R. Shelter in preparation for their Spring/Summer activities! A big thank you to the H.E.R. Shelter for all they do for our community!

Earth Day 2013: Newport News Team!

Our Newport News team provided a much-needed spring clean up and tree planting at the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center. This school is a non-profit organization.  Lots of sweet smiling faces peeking out the windows.

Earth Day 2013: Richmond Team!

Hilliard House is a program that assists homeless women and their children to build their capacity to live productively within the community.  Our Richmond team was honored to do a spring clean up to make their residence a little bit brighter.

Habitat For Humanity Planting Project: Earth Day 2013

JRGM Business Developer, Greta Bjorkquist, is the Vice President for the Central Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association. Greta and CVNLA planted trees, flowers, and shrubs in a landscaping project in partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Way to go Greta!

 

Earth Day 2013: Williamsburg Branch!

The Williamsburg office spent the day volunteering at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament pre-school in West Point, Va. We were very excited to provide a spring clean-up effort of the grounds, install donated plant material and flowers from local West Point businesses. We would like to thank Rt. 33 Garden Center and Saude Creek Winery for their donations to our Earth Day efforts. Also we would like to give a return “popcorn clap,’ to the cricket class who joined our efforts!

Earth Day 2013: The Sales Team!

The members and staff of Community Brain Injury Services were thrilled to celebrate Earth Day with James River Grounds Management!!  As a part of our Earth Day community projects, JRGM Sales Team went to The Denbigh House and The Mill House to help get their gardens started for the season.  The Clubhouse garden is a favorite project of the members.  From planting to cultivating, from harvesting to using the herbs and vegetables in our Clubhouse meals, the members enjoy every aspect and the entire Clubhouse community loves seeing (and eating!) the fruits of their labor.

On April 22nd and 23rd, JRGM Sales Team went out to the programs, bringing a truck filled with soil, soil amendments, plants, seeds, trellises, tomato cages and volunteers ready to work!  Together, the JRGM volunteers and house members weeded, tilled, planted, and made the gardens completely ready to go for the Spring!  Please enjoy the pictures from both houses!

Williamsburg Tree Dedication: March 2013

The Williamsburg office was honored to partner up with the Verena at the Reserve for a ceremonial tree planting. James River donated a cherry tree in memory of Mr. Lewis, the very first resident of the community. We would like to thank everyone at the Verena and the Lewis family to allow us to be a part of this ceremony.

JRGM Chesterfield Gives Back to Chimborazo Elementary: March 2013

JRGM Chesterfield performed a Giving Back project at Chimborazo Elementary. The project included mulching, edging, pruning, and a front sign flower installation. After a while, a few students were able to participate in the front sign flower installation! Local Pleasants Hardware store donated 25 pairs of kids gardening gloves and Glen Allen Nurseries provided the plant material. JRGM also gave the kids their own pot, soil, and seeds to grow their own flowers. It is really great to see other local companies coming together to help out! To us, giving back is more than donating for material needs; it is about showing care and long-term devotion to the places we call home.

JRGM First Annual Blood Drive: February 2013

Our first annual blood drive was a HUGE success! Donating blood at your local Virginia Blood Services just one time save 3 lives. Way to give JRGM team!

“Can The President!” Canned Food Drive: December 2012

JRGM’s “Can The President” Food Drive was an effort to fill President Maria Candler’s Office full of canned goods! Today, we loaded up the truck and headed to the Central VA Food Bank where JRGM donated over 370 pounds of nonperishable food items! Thank you to all who contributed to make this food drive successful! Happy Holidays!

Chesterfield Branch’s DIY Homeowner Workshop: November 2012

The Chesterfield Branch hosted a Do It Yourself workshop for the residents at Woodlake Community Association. The class was taught at a house of one of the participants. JRGM volunteers demonstrated fall planting and mulching.

JRGM Volunteers at Olympia Place at the Catch & Release Event

James River Grounds Management in Newport News spent last Saturday volunteering at the Olympia Place Catch and Release event. Liberty Property Trust donated 300lbs of catfish to the Olympia Property.  Residents spent the afternoon reeling in catfish, brim, and some bass as well.  JRGM volunteers Joshua Truesdale, Brittany Bennett, and Scott Wood supplied 10 cases of water, two large coolers and some sun screen for the event.  JRGM volunteers also took charge of baiting hooks, casting lines, and occasionally untangling pesky lines.

JRGM Donates Seeding and Aerating to Thomas Jefferson Athletics

JRGM Richmond Branch team welcomed the opportunity to partner with Thomas Jefferson High School to renovate their football field. As part of our commitment to community involvement, James River Grounds performed reseeding and aerating services to restore the field’s turf as a contribution to the school’s overhaul of the field. This service was generously donated with the help of the River City Rotary for materials. Just in time for TJ’s Homecoming next month. Good luck to the Vikings football team!!

JRGM Chesterfield Adopts a Highway

Beginning in April 2012, James River Grounds Management Chesterfield Branch took on the responsibility of maintaining Early Settlers Road and a section of Charter Colony Parkway with Virginia’s Adopt-A-Highway. Normally, an organization will clean up an adopted highway 4 times a year, but JRGM has volunteered to clean up 6 times a year as well as mowing the grass. We welcome the opportunity to be maintenance managers in keeping Virginia’s roads beautiful.

JRGM gives back with Building Goodness Foundation

James River Grounds Management Charlottesville branch participated in a lawn renovation as part of the Building Goodness Foundation. Our guys helped create bed spaces, cleaned out and renovated old bed spaces, mulched, pruned trees, cleaned up overgrown areas, and disposed of debris throughout the entire lawn. Good job Charlottesville!

March 2012

JRGM’s Williamsburg Branch joined up with Yankee Candle to educate children on the importance of tree planting in the environment. Yankee Candle donated over 250 dogwood trees to the kids within the community and James River donated a Red Bud that was installed at the site with the help of Yankee Candle Employees and family’s in attendance.

Race 4 The Wounded 5k

Race 4 The Wounded

Christy, Maria and Ben raced in the UVA Foundation Race 4 The Wounded 5K on Saturday June 4th benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. The Wounded Warrior Project provides programs and services to tens of thousands of service men and women who have been injured in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, many suffering traumatic brain injuries, amputations, and severe burns, which retire them from service. These programs and services include benefits like counseling, family assistance, internships and much more, to ease their burdens and aid in the transition back to a successful civilian life. Go Team JRGM!!!

The Dandelion Project

This fall the Richmond Enhancement Team of Laura Johnson and Greta Bjorkquist joined hundreds of volunteers in Holton Elementary School’s Dandelion Project. The project started as an idea to clean up some beds but quickly gained parent and community support, evolving in to an opportunity to teach children about the benefits of sustainable living. Liveroof representative Scott Titanish directed the project and JRGM donated all materials and labor necessary to complete it.

May 2010

On May 15th 2010, a memorial garden for Tucker Armstrong was planted in Tanner Village. Tucker was a lively three-year-old boy from Tanner Village who passed away on April 23rd after a yearlong battle with cancer. JRGM Powhatan donated time and equipment to excavate the site before the planting. We would like to give a special thanks to Watkins Nursery, Luck Stone and James River Nurseries who also donated materials for the garden.

Earth Day 2010

The different branches of JRGM participated in Earth Events where they gave back to the community. Powhatan gave herb plants for cooking away at St. Francis. Richmond’s management staff did a spring clean up at Brookfield Group Home. Newport News and Williamsburg teamed up to do a tree and garden install at Poquoson Elementary with a group of 3rd grade students. Portsmouth also worked with a local elementary school to do a tree install. Charlottesville hosted a Green Industry Career Day at Ivy Creek Elementary School.

All around, it was a great day in all of the branches to give back to the community!

James RIver Grounds Managements Charlottesville Branch hosted a career day at Ivy Creek School where we performed hands-on training sessions that introduced and educated the middle and high school students to the structure, process and benefits of the landscape industry.

Spring 2010

JRGM’s President, Maria Candler dedicated her time this spring to the kindergarten class at Jeb Stuart School in Richmond where she shared her experiences and directed the Junior Achievement Curriculum. Junior Achievement is the largest organization in the world dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. Its volunteers like Maria, who inspire and prepare students for success.

September 2009

The Powhatan Branch teamed up with St. Francis Hospital to clean up the grounds of Evergreen Elementary.

We provided plants for the front entrance and atrium garden and installed them with the help of employees from St Francis. A special thanks to Mr. Richard Brock of St Francis for organizing the event.

James River Grounds Management’s Williamsburg Branch Helps Habitat for Humanity House

James River Grounds Management’s Williamsburg Branch donated their time as well as all the plant material to landscape a Habitat for Humanity house in Gloucester. Habitat for Humanity is a housing ministry that seeks to eliminate homelessness through community involvement and sweat equity. We were honored to be a small part of this house and would like to thank to John Deere Landscapes for donating the sod.

Powhatan Branch Manager Jason Strohman (joined by his sons Alan and Ryan) and Account Manager Ben Corfield volunteered their time to sell lemonade for Anthem’s 8th Annual Lemon Aid to benefit the Childrens Miracle Network. The stand was sponsored by the Associated Builders and Contractors of Virginia and was at the Stratford Hill Ukrop’s.

JRGM Employee Donates Time to Local Nature Trail & Stream

Chase Townshend, Account Manager Richmond Branch, donates his time and expertise to help clean up the nature trail and restore the stream behind Three Chopt Elementary School. The nature trail and stream not only serve as a tool for students to learn about the environment but an opportunity for them to explore the scientific world around them.
